mirar
Elfwood went down after a major power surge of unknown origin (but it blinked here too, 200km away). No ETA right now.

So, the search engine is finally back on track. It's a different one - both new hardware and software. The software looks promising though, but I can't really garuantee that it will run stable now in the beginning....

Elfwood is back [27 Apr 2004|07:20am]

curvature
Lot of things seem to crash and burn nowadays. Hedda finally managed to get Elfwood PC up and running again with a new power unit and the removal of one burned out CPU. Now we are running on just one CPU so expect things to be a little slow. So, now we're back after 9 days of downtime.

Hiya.

Elfwood was TAKEN down on purpose this weekend because someone decided to do some cooling and electricity maintenance in the building.

When some Lysator guy tried to restart the main PC, it didn't start up. I am so busy with work right now that I didn't have -any- spare time to take care of this problem today, but Zino had a look.

He managed to find the source of the problem, it still refuse to start properly - right now, we're facing a major downtime until we can fix the broken (?) PC or replace it with a new one.

Expect Elfwood to be gone from 2 to 14 days.

Elfwood didn't come back up after the shutdown... it doesn't want to boot.

Hopefully we'll get it up soon.

Too Young? [06 Mar 2004|05:45pm]

We've been getting lots of emails in Support about people being suspended for being too young.
There is post explaining what's happening in the erb community journal:

Picture Loading on Elfwood [08 Feb 2004|10:52am]

curvature
We have some technical problems with the Ewancient picture server at around 2-4 swedish time every night, i.e. prime time for U.S. web surfers. The machine simply stops responding when the load get too high - we're currently investigating WHY that happen.

Welcome Back Elfwood [03 Feb 2004|07:50am]

curvature
Sun Feb 2 15:02:43 CET 2004

After several days of hard work, Elfwood is now reopened with a new layout and design. Some may argue that the new look is better or worse, but one thing is for sure; it's much easier to navigate Elfwood now thanks to the new left menu.
- Zone47 is closed, and all members of that art area are asked to go use the Elfwood Extranet to merge or convert their science fiction art.
- Lot's of thanks to all who donated during the down time, I think I have to close Elfwood more often, it was atleast an economical success!
- The daily mod-choices will be back tomorrow!

curvature
2004-01-30 -- Managed to squeeze in some more programming during the evenings; let's say I'm 90% finished now and that I have good hopes to maybe open it all up this weekend! Thanks to all who recently donated!

Update #3: [30 Jan 2004|08:05am]

curvature
2004-01-29 -- Busy at normal work today, too bad I don't have Elfwood as my Job . I got some time to fix some more today, so now it's 80% finished. Oh, don't forget that we run Elfwood on PC's bought by donated money - and we need powerful PC:s to serve 8'000'000 http hits every day:
We accept donations made through Paypal Inc and Kagi Inc.

Update #2: [29 Jan 2004|09:30am]

curvature
2004-01-28 -- Been working very hard all day with the new design/layout and merger. I am about 75% finished, but I need a couple of more days to finish what I've started, it was a bigger task than I initially expected. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Merge Update [24 Jan 2004|08:38pm]

curvature
Thomas has updated the News & Features section of the Elfwood front page with the following message:

Updates: You might wonder what the h*ck is going on right now behind the scenes at Elfwood, the ticket's being locked and all. Truth is that we've been preparing ourselves for the merge. The new-joins questionaries are updated and I have done some work on the new look of Elfwood. I have also been delayed by some personal stuff, but next week I will hopefully be able to open the new Elfwood (New look and No more Zone47) [More Info]. So, Expect Elfwood to be down for a day or two next week!

Upgrades: We've been improving the Elfwood server infrastructure a LOT recently. Details on our hardware investments can be found on our donations page, as usual. The PC called "Ewancient" now takes care of 100% of all picture requests. Since it's now a very powerful PC, and the main Elfwood server is released from these requests, all of Elfwood will be MUCH, much faster now! Oh, All our PCs are now moved to a 100mbit network connection too.

New: Elfwood Member Database Search [12 Jan 2004|07:50am]

curvature
Need some assistance locating someone at Elfwood?

Try the new Elfwood Member Database Search here: http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/members.html

It's updated once a day, and you can see the userpic of the member (if they have one) by holding your cursor over their name.

Further Developments: [05 Jan 2004|08:31pm]

curvature
In line with the changes taking place at Elfwood, the maximum story limit for Wyverns Library has now been increased from 35 to 50.

The staff have also been assisting Thomas in testing some of the merge tools, and it's looking very promising :)

Reminder: the ticket queue is currently closed both for new joins and picture/story/tour submissions, and will not be re-opened until after the merge. In the meantime, the mods are using this opportunity to work through the existing tickets and clear the queue.

Stay tuned for more, and remember to check the FAQ's on our Merger Page before you contact us

Gallery Merge and New Joins (cross post) [02 Jan 2004|10:41pm]

curvature
This message now appears in the ew_mods journal:

You may have seen the following message on the front page of Elfwood:

The Elfwood merge of the Fantasy and Scifi art sections "Lothlorien" and "Zone 47" is getting closer. At the same time, I will also change the graphical layout and navigation of Elfwood. I can't give you any date yet, but be prepared (and take a few screenshots if you wish to remember how Elfwood looked like in the old days)
I have posted some preliminary info on a special Merger page.
Please note that the tool for the conversion of Zone47 accounts is not yet activated at the Extranet
/Thomas

Due to the changes taking place at Elfwood, we have stopped all updates and new joins until after that has happened.

We don't yet have a date. Keep an eye on Elfwood's main page for further updates!

The Extranet is closed. [17 Jul 2003|06:20pm]

curvature
The queue was opened again following our hiatus, however there is a new problem.
We were accepting tickets as usual, but the items were not being uploaded into the galleries.
Unfortunately Thomas is currently away, and until he returns we will have to close the Extranet to prevent the queues from continuing to build up.
People will still be able to join Elfwood, but no new picture or library tickets will be created until the bug is fixed.
We will let you know when there is more information.

This problem was resolved.

13 attempts at fixing :: Something's broken!

[29 Mar 2003|10:11pm]

So, Elfwood stopped responding on the main servers today.
It was still possible to login and peek around, but anything that did anything with disk activity other then the root disk just seemed to die. It wasn't possible to reboot it nicely either.

But when I powercycled using the new fancy remote powercycler, it didn't come back up like it's done every time someone was actually *there* and powercycled it. Typically, neh?

So now it's still down. No idea when it will get back up again, I hope someone might pass there at least tomorrow.

I also saw a wierd, techy "kernel oops" in one of the logs, if any linux kernel guru happens to pass I wouldn't mind a hint:
scsi0:A:14:0): Locking max tag count at 64
...
(scsi0:A:6:0): Locking max tag count at 64
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 7073618f
...
Oops: 0000
...[lots of figures cut out]

My *guess* is that the SCSI subsystem shuts down for some reason (bad termination, bad disks, faulty controller), but it'd be neat to know which hardware we should replace...
